Discover Saint Savin et Saint Germain with the hiking trail "Over ancient ways"
Saint Savin : a wonderful cultural and architectural heritage…
The Abbey of Saint Savin is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is managed by a Public Cultural Cooperation Group. Saint Savin is the capital of the canton and offers shops, public services, a campsite by the banks of the Gartempe and an open-air swimming pool. The village offers a full and varied programme of cultural and sporting activities throughout the year.
Saint Germain : from prehistory to nowadays…
The landscape reveals traces of human occupation as early as Paleolithic and Neolithic times. The Gallo-Roman era is also evident here with the Roman Road from Poitiers to Bourges.
Alongside the River Gartempe, two monuments remain from the Middle-Age: the beautiful old church of Saint Germain d’Auxerre and the old bridge to Saint Savin. On a short walk from the church to the village centre, you may observe the traditional village houses, many with outside staircases which are rare in this region.
The area has preserved its traditional status as a small rural community from breeding pigeons of Bouesse to cereal farming.
“En Lo” farm in Premilly offers horse & pony rides along wooded trails in Josefa valley. The park on the banks of the Gartempe provides an area for camper vans.
Discover Antigny with the hiking trail "In the hells of history"
Antigny : a village brimming with history…
The first human occupation of this site probably goes back to 24 000 years BC.
The Roman road from Poitiers to Bourges crosses the River Gartempe at Sciaux Ford. Many artefacts from this Gallo-Roman site are exhibited in Antigny Museum.
Take time to make a short walking tour of the beautiful old square and view the 13th Century “Lantern of the Dead” which is situated in its centre. Around the square, there are many interesting buildings (including a small chateau) dating from the 12th to the early 19th century. Some buildings have outside staircases which is quite rare in this region.
Visit the 11th Century church of Notre Dame de l’Incarnation and its 15th Century chapel of Sainte Catherine with its wonderfully preserved mural paintings.
